A brief history of know-how in France and Paris

The artistic genius of Paris was born in the craft workshops that met the demands of princes and sometimes even influenced their tastes.

. Cabinet-making:
Trades were grouped by districts with the Royal Ordinance of 1471. Consequently, the craftsmen who produced the masterpieces of French furniture were concentrated around the Saint-Antoine abbey. Even today, the best fine carpenters, cabinet-makers and upholsterers, heirs to this know-how, work the in Faubourg Saint-Antoine area.

. Goldsmith and silversmith’s trade:
Later, Louis XIV started the fashion for ormolu furnishings, after having had to sell off his silver household treasures to finance the Augsburg war in 1689. Gold and silversmiths, founders of fine Parisian crafts, started to develop their trade around the Pont au Change bridge. They rivaled each other in creativity during the entire eighteenth century and produced objects as diverse as clocks, candelabras, lanterns, chandeliers and flatware

. Upholstery:
Craftsmen who made woven upholstery fabric set up their trade around what is now the Place des Victoires, where woven fabrics gradually gave way to drawings printed on material at the end of the eighteenth century.

The alliance of these three types of expertise permit Puppy de Paris to propose exceptional products today.
